We are truly grateful Oldencraig Equestrian Centre and Elite Management for supporting this event. Indeed, it would have been quite impossible to achieve such success without your support.

Dear Ian and Vicky,

Thank you once again for hosting ‘Strictly’ at Oldencraig and helping us to raise £5000 for the foundation. This will help to fund two new projects in Newcastle and Liverpool, which is fantastic, giving more children the opportunity to ride.
I am so grateful for your continued support and please thank all your staff on my behalf for all their hard work.

Very best wishes for Christmas and 2010!

"Since childhood, some thirty years ago, my relationship with horses has grown and grown, developing as the years have passed into a passion for dressage to the point today where my spouse refers to me as the ‘warmblood centaur’ . Due to overseas moves, a young family and other commitments, I have only recently acquired the time and finances to fully apply myself to this great sport. My introduction to Oldencraig Equestrian Centre came some eighteen months ago, including a tour around the centre and the opportunity to meet the owner, Ian Winfield. OEC is a premier show centre and dressage training yard, refurbished through a substantial £3m investment which provides an unrivalled training facility with Olympic and thirteen times National Champion and trainer Vicki Thompson at the helm.

Jill TimmsDuring that first visit to the centre I remember well my admiration for all that I saw including the facilities, contented horses and the smart respectful grooms. When I entered the office, Ian was on the telephone and quickly shifted gears from businessman to perfect host. We chatted about my tour and Ian is an amusing storyteller with a super sense of humour. As we discussed my limited experience, Ian acknowledged my long term goals and proceeded to explain his belief in providing a modular approach to the training of horse and rider. Although I did not meet Vicki on my first visit, it was clear that OEC was a professional dressage training yard and an attention to detail was clearly evident, with no expense spared. At the time my youngest child was six months from entering full time school, so I took a couple of inspiring lessons with Vicki on a schoolmaster, as well as viewing other dressage yards. I quickly concluded from this research that although there are an increasingly attractive range of highly professional training establishments available in the UK I could not ask for a more committed or knowledgeable trainer than Vicki. I discussed my ambition with my spouse, who provided supportive, positive feedback and continued ‘sponsorship’ throughout. Once settled on Oldencraig, we enjoyed an evening with Ian and Vicki and as a result arranged to move our two horses to OEC.

Jill TimmsA supportive family allows me to ride five times a week during term time. During school holidays my children are welcome to play board games or watch videos in the heated coffee room. Although the journey from my home in Bucks is over one hour, my training is comprehensive. Each time I leave the yard I am star struck by an overwhelming sense of positive progress and feeling of satisfaction and success which more than makes up for the time spent in the car. Each lesson with Vicki has provided for a continuous gradual accumulation of correct training and has further fuelled a strong desire to be the best I can be.

After a few months with goals and an appropriate training plan in place, we purchased from OEC a handsome well schooled Dutch Warmblood. After four further months I was riding and winning Elementary classes and I sometimes have to pinch myself as I had never previously ridden a sideways movement let alone canter pirouettes.

Oldencraig has two key factors behind its success story, Ian Winfield and Vicki. Together they build upon the confidence and self belief of the rider and horse to succeed, providing an environment in which ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things."

Kate McCormackI had a lesson at Oldencraig in the summer of 1988 - almost 17 years ago (oh dear!), so have witnessed the complete transformation of the Centre over a long period.

When Ian brought the yard I owned a blue roan mare (Maggie) and now have Charly Chanteries (Wiggy) who I have owned for nearly 5 years and compete at Affiliated Elementary/Medium under Vicki‘s expert tuition. The facilities are exceptional and improvements constant, and thanks to a superb indoor school I am able to train after work.

Ian and his staff are friendly and obliging and we couldn‘t wish for anywhere better.

Noeleen StolworthyI was looking for a professional dressage establishment that would offer superb facilities, a reliable, tailor-made service that would take care of every equine need and the opportunity to train with one of the best .............. I found it (and a lot more) when I moved to Oldencraig!!!

Sarah WilesI had been ‘playing’ at unaffiliated dressage for many years on and off, and a couple of years ago I was looking around for a new horse. I knew of Oldencraig‘s excellent reputation, and thinking they were ‘out of my league’ , I called on the off chance they had something suitable for me within my modest budget. After speaking to Ian Winfield, who was very knowledgeable and understanding and who listened carefully to my needs, I visited the yard and was shown four super horses. I fell in love with and bought a 4 year old Dutch bred horse called ‘Prince’ . Having never ridden above Novice level before, and knowing I would need all the help I could get, I agreed to keep him at Oldencraig on Schooling Livery.

In the months that followed, with the hard work, skill and dedication of his rider Giles Relf, who is supported by regular training from Vicky Thompson, combined with the outstanding facilities and excellent care of the staff, Prince has gone from strength to strength, whilst never being pushed beyond his own pace. Prince is currently the Novice National Champion, and has done brilliantly in the 5 year old young horse classes with a 6th and two 3rds at International Level. Under Oldencraig‘s careful training programme, I am hoping he will continue to progress. He has begun a successful Elementary campaign and is working at Medium level at home. I could not be happier, and all from a chance telephone call!

Although he is on schooling livery, and I only ride him myself once or twice a week, every time I ride him I see an improvement, and I am improving along with him. This is the beauty of Oldencraig - they tailor their service and training exactly to your needs and requirements, allowing you and your horse to reach their full potential.

SylvieBarnaby and I arrived at Oldencraig in November 2001. It was early evening, on a cold night and the lights running up each side of the long drive glittered as our lorry came through the gates. On that cold November evening, at the end of their long working day, we were met with a warm reassuring welcome as we settled Barnaby in for the night. Good looking my TB/WB may be but with a horse that‘s live‘d always felt that Barnaby needed a smallish, quiet environment, but a close friend suggested taking him to Oldencraig. Neither Barnaby nor I do children playing hide and seek on a yard, and I do like things tidy and clean. Well all I can say is that coming to Oldencraig was the best decision we could have‘s spot‘s run as a serious competition yard for the committed rider should be. The facilities are superb.

One of the reasons Oldencraig is such a success is that Ian is very astute at developing a programme that really suits the individual. He‘s a very good listener, and very constructive. When we first met I had shared my concerns - an‘d responded positively to ever‘d thrown at him. And now, if I need to talk to him about‘s excellent at coming up with constructive suggestions.

And what fabulous results we‘ve had. In autumn 2003 Barnaby won the OEC Unaffiliated Championship in Prelim; also getting the highest overall score of the day. In summer 2004 he won Hickstead Unaffiliated South East Regional Dressage Championships in Prelim and was placed Reserve Champion in the Novice. Giles Relf has been just what we needed. Calm, patient and a very accomplished rider. He oversees Bar‘s day-to-day routine, schools Barnaby and then gives me my lessons. He knows exactly how my horse is working, and where his weaknesses and strengths are. Through the summer months in particular we hack, which we adore‘ve picked up on our jumping career!

It is hard to believe the standards which are achieved day-to-day on the yard itself. I always say to people that I would happily eat my lunch if it fell on the floor. But to be honest it would be swept up off the floor before I got to it. It‘s a team effort, led by Ian and Vicki, an‘s a team‘ve enjoyed being with very much indeed.

Ann CraigDomino was conceived at Oldencraig in 1998 when in previous ownership. He is a registered sports pony stallion with the SPSS. In 2004 when I realized that my health was not up to doing justice to my home-bred stallion who had been lazing around at home I came to look at Oldencraig. Ian showed me around. The changes and improvements since 1998 were stunning.

Despite Domino being only 13.2 (and having an attitude larger than his size) Ian was confident that his team would be able to train Domino.

From small beginnings in May 2004 Domino has progressed through the unaffiliated competitions and is now competing affiliated Open Novice, all with Oldencraig riders. He is also schooled up to Medium so far by the Oldencraig riders and is consistently competing against horses with success.
As an owner who doesn‘t ride her own horse and can only get to see him once a week I am confident that all his needs are attended to when I‘m not there. I get great pleasure from seeing him compete and do so well with his riders and there is always a good camaraderie with Vicki, Giles and other owners watching and/or competing themselves.

Ian is also a hands-on person and despite the luxury of the surroundings is often on the yard getting stuck into the work alongside his staff.

I moved to Oldencraig shortly after it was purchased by Ian and have seen the transformation that you see today from a scruffy livery yard to a well run equestrian and show centre that has won many awards.

Having a job that keeps me abroad for a large part of the month, the care of my horses was paramount in choosing a yard. When I first arrived I owned a chestnut gelding called Listowel Harlequin (Harley) a 16.2 Irish x TB. He had been competed in showjumping, cross country and dressage but had never shone in any. Since being at OEC and competed by Rhoanne Bradford who trains with Vicki, he has won numerous dressage classes and this year has qualified for the OEC championship in Elementary and Medium, the Elementary unaffiliated championship at Hickstead and the Southern Regionals all to be held later this year.

Karen MaleyWhile at the yard I purchased a Bay gelding called Drummer Boy (Drummer) a 16.3 Irish x. He was an ex hunter with a major attitude. The first few months were a nightmare. If he didn‘t want to do something he would rear or stand still and refuse to move. Due to the commitment of staff both past and present we have competed in the showjumping circuit and have had great success. This year Teresa Smyth joined the team as an Advanced Rider and Instructor and fell in love with the horse. When I was asked if she could compete him in dressage I was shocked. Never would I have thought that he could do it! In January this year they competed in their first competition at Novice level and won the class on 67%! Since then they have qualified for the OEC Championship at Novice and Elementary, Hickstead at Elementary and the Southern Championships.

This story goes to show that through excellent staff, top class facilities and the best training with Vicki Thompson, dreams can become reality and I owe a huge debt to everybody at OEC and especially to Ian who has given me the encouragement and backing to achieve what my two boys have done!! - a huge thank you to you all.

Penny BrinsleyIan has created a‘horse and rider heaven’ - whenever you go onto the yard you can not help but notice how all the horses are incredibly happy and in excellent condition - the stables, yards and facilities are extensive and immaculate. The experienced staff are friendly, helpful and most importantly treat each horse as an individual.

I moved my horse to OEC 4 years ago, when my trainer Vicki Thompson relocated to OEC and have never looked back! Thank you Ian for creating such a wonderful place for us to keep our horses!

I came to Oldencraig a year ago. When I first met Ian Winfield he showed me around the excellent premises and explained the outstanding diversity of available services. The high level of care of the horses was immediately apparent. I have never been disappointed; since that day the service continues to be superb.

I have been involved in dressage for seventeen years and have had my horses at a variety of livery yards. On arrival at Oldencraig I was immediately struck by the professionalism of the staff and the attention to detail with regard to the care of my horse. As a businesswoman, I was particularly impressed by the level of service and customer care (for both horse and rider); as a horse fanatic I was amazed by the concern for my horse‘s well being. From the feeding schedule to the schooling routine, Oldencraig ensures my horse has the best possible.

On arrival I met Vicki Thompson and have been training with her ever since. I have been heartened by her professionalism, her good humour and her talent. Both as a coach and as a rider she has made me feel that nothing is ever too much trouble. Her ability to explain every aspect of riding and horse care has given me the opportunity to work with a totally dedicated and talented horsewoman. She pays attention to every detail, from my competition plans, to my horse‘s feeding regime.

My horse is healthy and happy, and I feel able to go away on business and trust that he will be cared for to the highest possible standard. The facilities are amazing, the staff friendly and totally committed. Oldencraig provides a balance between respect for my wishes and care for my horse, which enables me to feel safe and secure with regard to my horse‘s happiness and well-being.
Oldencraig is immaculate as a livery yard, a show centre and as a centre for learning horsemanship. It is indeed a centre of excellence.

Three glorious years have ended at Oldencraig.

They have been three exceedingly happy years for me and my horse, Missuki, and I shall miss it enormously. However, happier times are ahead as my husband and I are preparing for retirement to the USA. Yes, we are leaving the UK.

Jenny BamfordBefore I came to Oldencraig I was having a difficult time trying to deal with my beautiful horse that I could neither handle on the ground and had lost the confidence to ride. Then I met Ian Winfield at Oldencraig, I explained my situation to him and he suggested that if I wanted to carry on riding, then to give my horse a second chance and bring her to Oldencraig. This I did and with their help, training and guidance it worked, all of Ian‘s promises came true.

Every step of the way the trainers and staff have been there for me and my horse, slowly allowing me to develop the confidence to enable a wonderful relationship with her and to enjoy improving my riding skills, again.

Oldencraig runs efficiently under the watchful eye of its owner, Ian Winfield and his friendly team of managers and staff - nothing is too much trouble to ask for.

I have enjoyed not only the exceptional facilities and training at Oldencraig but also the friendly atmosphere that radiates throughout and I would recommend it whole heartedly. However I think you must know that words cannot say enough of how I feel about my time at Oldencraig - it has been fantastic for me. Wish I did have a ‘dressage star’ but nevertheless I did have a good thing going with Missuki, we were close and we got a lot out of each other.

Thank you Ian, Vicky and your staff.

Jenny Bamford

I came across Oldencraig‘s website when I had already spent several fruitless and frustrating months trying to find a young dressage horse. I was beginning to despair of ever finding the right horse and was facing the prospect of travelling abroad “ something I had really wanted to avoid. I was looking for a nice, unspoilt young horse with three correct paces, a scopey trot and a good canter “ as well as being very rideable with a straightforward temperament. All of the horses I had seen had either the temperament without the ability or the ability without the temperament!

I was impressed by the amount of information about the horses for sale on the website and when I left a message on Ian‘s phone he rang me straight back even though it was a Sunday. After chatting with Ian it was apparent that there might be three horses for me to try which was really appealing as Ian was confident that even if none of them suited he would be able to find one that did. He was genuinely interested in my plans for the horse and made sure he knew exactly what I was looking for so he could show me the most likely matches. When I arrived to try the horses not only was the yard immaculate but the staff were really friendly and helpful. All three horses I tried that afternoon were going very correctly and were a joy to ride. They had been very well produced and all had the right temperaments and ability.

I was instantly smitten with Carbone Z “ now known as Zeddy to his friends. Ian couldn‘t have been more helpful about arranging the details of the sale “ the whole process was painless and well organised. It soon occurred to me that the best place to keep my new horse at livery would be OEC and I have not regretted that decision. Initially I was worried that such a large, busy yard would be a bit impersonal but nothing could be further from the truth. In just a couple of weeks I felt like part of the team! The staff are all really friendly and professional “ nothing is too much trouble and the standard of care of the horses is excellent. A unique feature of OEC is that Ian is happy to design a tailored made to measure package for any rider. Whether a high level of support is required or the rider just wants to get on with it “ Ian is more than happy to oblige. I had brought on many young horses but it was still good to know that the back up was there if I needed help.

Once I had got to know Zeddy I started to train with Vicki who is without doubt a gifted teacher. Vicki has that rare quality of being able to identify exactly what the rider must do to improve the horse‘s way of going. Having found my prospective star it is a joy to be able to work with Vicki. I particularly value the emphasis she puts on the h‘s welfare and her ability to work with the individual personality of each horse and rider. OEC is a great place to bring up a young horse “ the superb facilities are combined with a varied and full schedule of competitions. In just two competition outings Zeddy qualified for the OEC winter championships and I am quite certain he has an exciting career ahead of him. I cannot recommend Ian and Vicki highly enough “ buying a horse is a stressful experience but at OEC even the most anxious purchaser has nothing to fear!

My first introduction to Oldencraig was via my girlfriend who insisted on visiting it one Saturday where we were met by Ian covered in mud, paintbrush in hand, working on B block. The facilities and its growing reputation were so impressive then (4 years ago!) that we moved straight away.

As a non rider moving to the centre one of the most refreshing features apart from the quality of the arenas and stables was the attitude of the staff. We were made welcome and found that they made time to explain and put everything into layman‘s terms. There is a genuine interest in the development of both the horse and rider as a team whether you are learning as a novice like myself or riding at the higher levels, with the top riders (resident and liveries) all willing to give advice and assist.

This is a centre that as well as having a great reputation as a competition, training and livery yard still maintains a relaxed family atmosphere where riders, family, friends and supporters are all made equally welcome.

Since moving to Oldencraig I have bought two horses through introductions made at the yard, both of which were exactly as described by Vicki and matched perfectly my requirements of knowledgeable, eye catching and above all safe to learn on.

It‘s been a fun four years and we are looking forward to the many more of them.

Richard Grant

We like the daily routine, the cleanliness of the horses beds, the quality of the stables and the way all of the staff respond to any requests we make. When we first came for our guided tour, we were immediately impressed with the facilities offered. At most livery yards you‘re lucky to get a sand school and leak proof stable. To have three quality menages, top quality unbelievably strong stables, numerous wash downs, indoor school, indoor lunging, horsewalker, it‘s like the equestrian santa (Ian) delivered everything to Oldencraig. We would also like to thank Jag and Kelly for ensuring our horses are well cared for.

Lisa & Alan

I came across OEC website whilst searching for a BHS approved livery yard and was immediately impressed by what Oldencraig had to offer for both the advanced and novice rider.

During an impressive guided tour with Ian, I had the opportunity to see first hand the outstanding facilities on offer which were both immaculate and pristine.

It was evident from meeting the friendly staff how dedicated, professional and helpful they all are in their day to day running of the centre.

Following my guided tour, Ian was more than willing to discuss individual needs from feeding to training and was interested in how OEC can help me meet my personal goals.

I was completely inspired and in October 2004 Pleasure moved into C Block and Oldencraig became my second home.

I came to Oldencraig with my horse shortly after Ian bought the yard. I chose Oldencraig because of the growing reputation of care they gave to the horses and owners and Ian‘s plans for further improvement. Although the yard was still in a rather rundown state some basic works had already been done. A short while after arriving I began working for Ian and continued to do so for the next few years in various capacities.

I have witnessed over the years Ian‘s transformation of Oldencraig from a neglected establishment into one of the most prestigious yards in the country. I have seen first hand how Ian has used his business background to develop Oldencraig and yet retain the compassion and devotion that is essential to any good yard‘s time in the army has also left its mark; the high standards of cleanliness and order that he demands make an exceptional environment for all, a major factor that makes Oldencraig stand out from every other yard.

I am very proud to have been involved with Oldencraig and to have played a small part in its progress over the years. From the original plans talked about when I arrived to what is seen today, it has far exceeded expectations. The journey has not been easy for Ian, but no matter what the difficulty Ian has carried on and driven himself hard to get the job done. Many would have faltered after the first few hurdles.

Oldencraig is now a shining example to the equestrian world of how things can be done. The horses are cared for to an extremely high standard and the emphasis is still very much on catering for both horse and rider. I would not want to keep my horse anywhere else.

I decided when I reached a slightly ‘more mature age’ to take up horse riding! Unfortunately my initial experience was not good, as I had two bad falls one of which resulted in me fracturing my pelvis. However this did not put me off!

Someone told me about Oldencraig Equestrian Center two years ago and after speaking to Ian Winfield, I booked in lessons. I found the staff extremely helpful and supportive, my lessons were on well mannered horses and I slowly regained my confidence. When a sensible horse belonging to an Oldencraig client became available for loan - I went for it.

To beginning with I kept him at the yard and again Ian and his team came up trumps teaching me the ropes of horse care and stable management, boosting my confidence no end. I now own a Dressage schoolmaster which I purchased through Oldencraig and I have learnt so much from him to the extent I am now competing at local shows.

It is thanks to Ian and the fabulous staff at Oldencraig that I am even riding, let alone owning and competing on my own horse.

Like many other men I have met at Oldencraig over the last three years, I am a dressage widower spending many a happy hour watching my wife train and compete with any of the three horses we have had at livery there since 2002. I originally made the mistake thinking that Oldencraig was only interested in dressage horses and riders. Once it sunk in with me that this was not the case - I took up where I had left off 12 years ago and acquired Hugo, a 17.2 ten year old with lots of bone - well I am 18 stone! I was taken out by other livery owners on hacks and various staff try to persuade me that I should try dressage but was eventually encouraged to have a ago at show jumping - not bad at 52 years old. I entered several of the show jumping classes that are regularly held there and had the time of my life competing against all comers but would always of course lose out to the kids on their ponies when it came to the speed classes. It is all great fun, nice people and very good local pubs!

When my mum decided to move her horse to Oldencraig I of course followed with Bugsy, a 5 year old coloured pony from Ireland. I am not the most enthusiastic rider you will find but I do like looking after my pony, grooming him and generally messing about with some of the other kids there and having a good time. When I am in the mood for riding all of the staff are very encouraging and helpful but when I haven‘t got the time to ride Bugsy he is exercised and groomed for me while I concentrate on being Johnny Depp‘s biggest fan!!

Abigail Riley

My current horse at livery at Oldencraig is Rachmaninoff V or Mannie to his friends. Mannie is the third horse I have had since coming to the yard in 2002 and I am a self confessed dressage enthusiast. Not only do I enjoy the quality of the facilities but it is nice to be in the company of other enthusiasts where the conversation always centres around how your horse is getting on and what results you are achieving. Having overheard many of these conversations my husband insists that we talk in tongues. I think the social side of Oldencraig is often overlooked and as a family it is a part we very much enjoy. I am a registered Osteopath with a busy practice but I still manage to ride almost every day leaving instructions in the office diary and always turning up to find my horse prepared as requested.

Sherilyn Bungay

My gelding Nectar and I joined the Oldencraig team in November, so are relatively new to the yard. Due to the long travelling time from home I came with the idea of spending just a few months to relaunch my riding after having a baby last summer ..... Now I know we won‘t be moving (and I just might have to buy a diesel car to keep the petrol costs down!) What has changed my mind - well the facilities speak for themselves and are superb, but moreover the staff are totally welcoming and I know that Nektar has wonderful care day and night.

Rhoanne Bradford, one of the advanced riders at the yard, has been working with me and Nektar over that last few months. Even though we are at the bottom of the ‘Dressage Ladder’ and are competing Prelim/Novice, I feel we are given as much attention and support as anyone else. Rho is the perfect balance between helping me gain my confidence back after my maternity break from riding, to pushing me and getting me excited about learning new things each week. She is very patient and always around to give me suggestions (or just a shoulder to cry on).

I thought I might get intimidated by the amazing horses and riders at Oldencraig, but have only been inspired to date, and although often envious of others, I realize that we all have one common goal - to improve riding and to get the best out of our horses (whilst providing them the best care going). Oldencraig is defiantly the place to achieve this goal.

I work and live in Kobe, Japan and keep my mare in the UK. I have struggled in the past to find somebody trustworthy and capable enough to produce my mare, but finally I have found this combination at Oldencraig.

Mascara has gone from strength to strength and I am both amazed and delighted with the results that Rhoanne has achieved so readily. I cannot recommend Oldencraig enough!

From the first moment I went through the gates, I too fell under Oldencraig‘s spell (which surprised me, as I have long been known for my hard-nosed pessimism). Oldencraig has some, if not the best equestrian facilities in the UK, to which Ian is continuously reviewing and improving. My first and lasting impression was of a professional yard, where every detail has been considered and implemented. The horses are all calm, content and always pleased to see you when you approach them. The staff are friendly and polite, nothing is too much bother and they always make the time to speak with you and make you feel comfortable. I was looking for a professional yard, that would do exactly what they said they would do (something I had struggled to find in the past) and a yard that would not be phased by International borders. The owner lives in Japan (Yoka) 11 months of the year and I manage it here in the UK. A somewhat complicated arrangement. None of this phased Ian Winfield, who is clearly fluent in International business protocol, he has made the transition completely painless and the mare has never gone so well in her life. Already, in the few short weeks that the mare has been under Ian and Vicki‘s tutelage with Rhoanne Bradford riding, I have seen her go from strength to strength and am absolutely delighted with her progress. I have absolute trust in Ian and Vicki‘s integrity, professionalism and knowledge and know that they will ensure that the mare reaches her absolute best in the sport. Who could fail with such a dream team to back you?

I cannot recommend Oldencraig highly enough. I only wish I had found them years ago! - Thank you Oldencraig.

Tara

I arrived at Oldencraig 2 years ago, having been persuaded by a friend of mine who was already there enjoying the wonderful facilities and superb training to give it a go. Although my horse Luca who I arrived with has now been sold, I continued with my training under the watchful eye of Oldencraig‘s professional instructors. When I started my training at Oldencraig, I had limited experience and was very much a novice rider. I have gone from strength to strength (no I can‘t believe it either) and I am now doing tempi changes on Oldencraig‘s wonderful ex-grand prix schoolmaster Charlie. I love my training sessions and the staff are professional and friendly. Ian and Vicki work very hard to keep their yard working at such a high standard and if you ever have to go away, you can rest assured your horse will be well looked after and professionally schooled if you so wish. My riding has improved above all my expectations, and when I have found my next dressage star it will certainly be kept at Oldencraig

I moved my young Dutch warmblood, Uri, to Oldencraig in April 2005 having only owned him for 5 months and feeling I needed extra help in bringing him on. I was lacking in confidence due to a recent history of nasty falls off another horse and the combination was a recipe for disaster. Also my job took me out of the country for weeks at a time. Already it was beginning to show in Uri‘s behavior. Uri was put on Schooling Livery and Ian and his team devised a training regimen to suit the level Uri was at. Concurrently I was having lessons on their school horses to rebuild my confidence. Rhoanne Bradford was Uri‘s dedicated rider and my instructor. Both his and my progress over the past months have been a credit to her. Uri is on Full Livery now but I continue to have regular lessons with Rho and am so pleased with the direction we are going in. Uri is a different horse and I am a different rider. I now have the confidence to compete in preliminary dressage classes and am looking forward to climbing the scales.

The staff and facilities at Oldencraig are outstanding. The horses are cared for to a very high standard and the stables are immaculate. When I am required to travel for work I know I can sleep at night knowing Uri will be well tended to. Also, with a selection of quality arenas to ride in, including an indoor arena, there is never a shortage of space

Ian, Vicki and team have created a wonderful environment, which seems to be constantly improved upon, and I look forward to a positive future for Uri and I at Oldencraig.

After a shoulder operation, I found myself struggling to give the attention and training to my four year old Friesian whom I, with the help of a couple of friends, was breaking in. If it hadn‘t have been for the encouragement from my husband and friends at the DIY livery yard which I kept Moon at, I think I would still be in the early stages of breaking Moon in. I had always thought that Oldencraig was way above my level, but I made the phone call and booked a date and time for my husband and I to go and chat to Ian and see the facilities and I can honestly say that we were both suitably impressed and wanted to know when we could bring Moon along to start his training!

We arrived on the morning of the 2nd May 2005 and were greeted by people coming from every corner of the lorry park, whom of course I now know very well. It was such a warm welcome and I was sure then that Moon would have a very comfortable and spoilt stay.

He has had such good attention, one day I turned up and there were three people pampering him all at once, whilst he lounged diagonally laying across the stable! He very quickly began looking like a real dressage horse and I have Rho and Abby to thank for this. Not only have they been professional about their work, but they have the most wonderful sense of humour along with their gentle caring nature.

The whole of the stables and yard always look clean and tidy, with improvements happening day by day and everything done with such impeccable taste, it is certainly fit for any major event (2012 Olympics??). I was encouraged to compete a walk and trot test and it was one of the proudest moments in my life, he looked so smart when I turned up and he was so good about what I was asking him to do. We did really well and got 56% and I couldn‘t have achieved this without Oldencraig and its wonderful staff.

Four months have gone past and I have mixed feelings about leaving, I will be both sad and happy to take Moon home, sad because I will not be part of the great atmosphere and friends I have made and see every week, but happy because I have a wonderfully trained horse to take home and show off to everybody. I am also so glad that we are only local to Oldencraig and they will not be able to get rid of us that easily, because I will be booking us in for lessons with Rho and hopefully competing regularly at their shows.
It just leaves me to say a big thank you! to Ian, Rho, Abby, Kelly, Jag, Theresa, Susan and absolutely everybody else, not forgetting the two attention seeking adorable dogs. I look forward to visiting regularly.

Karen Leatherbarrow (Horse in for breaking)

Ian and Vicki - thank you so much for letting Bobby-Bay and I stay at Oldencraig and use your amazing facilities. I have improved more than ever. I can now ride a dressage test successfully with some of it‘s requirements and my pony and I are jumping fast clear rounds every day.

Oldencraig, Oldencraig
The best show centre around,
After my stay, I can get my pony round
The facilities are great,
And well up to date
Never a speck of dust here
The shows are well directed
The horses are always protected
The staff are very helpful,
And the trainers are mega-cool
Vicki‘s riding is amazing,
Ian‘s strictness never changing,
Now after the summer
I wish I was never leaving.

Bonita Crosdil

Thank you very much for letting me and my pony, Harry, use your facilities over the summer holidays. We have improved 100% since we first came. I‘d also like to thank you for letting Harry graze in your paddocks whilst I have been at your stables, he is the right weight now!

Thank you Vicki for all your tips, they were very much appreciated. I hope you are both enjoying your swimming pool!

Samantha Crosdil

Thank you Ian and Vicki for allowing me to keep George at Oldencraig over the summer and allowing me so much freedom. I have really enjoyed George with you this summer.

Olivia Timms

Thank you for being there with Oldencraig when I needed to learn to ride again. It is one year and one day since my dear horse had a heart attack and died, falling on me and making rather a mess of my right leg. When I felt ready to start riding again in February this year I was so weak I could barely do rising trot. Ro and Paddy were superb. Initially it was very depressing but Ro was very encouraging and bit by bit it has got better.

This week I had a lovely lesson with Aaron and Jess, and felt almost back to normal. Some friends of mine have found me a horse, so I will be down a little less often, but will have the odd schoolmaster lesson to make sure I am keeping on the right lines. Without Oldencraig it would have been so easy to give it all up. So thank you so much for your excellent facilities, patient horses and brilliant staff.

Catherine Ellis

I never fail to be impressed when I visit Oldencraig to compete - your facilities are excellent and I admire your determination in making dressage accessible to all levels and abilities at a centre which really is second to none. It is always a pleasure to visit and the standards never falter.

Julie Vear - Competitor

I guess my testimonial would begin like so many others. If only I had found Oldencraig sooner, have spent more time riding, and less time mucking out, or have started training properly years ago. My advice, don‘t waste valuable years like I did, take a look at what Oldencraig has to offer; Partnership Ian Winfield and Olympic rider Vicki Thompson have an Equestrian Centre like no other.

I arrived at Oldencraig just over a year ago with two horses. My game plan was to sort my riding out and to enjoy competing again. When I came I was struggling at prelim level, within 6 months I was Oldencraig‘s prelim champion, and now one year on, I am qualified for the medium championships. With V‘s expertise I am sure she is not going to let me stop here, she is always so enthusiastic and encouraging. Oldencraig Equestrian Centre provide me with everything I need, from kind personal help with my horses, (never is a task too great or too small), to boosting masses of confidence in me before a championship. And when I am away I know my horses are happy and cared for meticulously.

Oldencraig is beautiful and immaculate, when I compete you really feel like you‘re on centre stage, yet the atmosphere is so tranquil. Ian and V‘s clients are very supportive to each other there is a real sense of team spirit.

Lastly I feel I am very lucky to be here. And one particularly special thing is leaving each day after training with that feeling of achievement and excitement to achieve again tomorrow. Thank you all at Oldencraig.

Karen Crosdil

I wish to thank both of you and your staff, particularly Theresa and Rhoanne, for instructions on caring and riding Paddy (purchased through Dressage Worldwide - Oldencraig). I hope that I can return to you in the future, hopefully, a better rider!

Kate Amato

I have been offered a new job which will mean relocating most of the week to the Southampton/Winchester area. I am excited about the new job and house but sad to have to move Inca as we have had a good time at Oldencraig. The faciliites and level of care have been excellent and I would recommend your services to anyone. I hope to get some further lessons in before moving and maybe some competing!!

Gill Ross

Having spent many hours over the last five years watching my partner train and compete her dressage horse, it was inevitable that I would dip my toe into the water at some point. So - it came as no surprise to anyone, when, having learnt the basics, I recently purchased a fantastic schoolmaster from Ian and Vicki and took up (livery) residence at Oldencraig!! Baz is a 16.3hh Oldenburg gelding who is ideally suited to my ability and my ambitions (!) and we clicked from day one. With help from Theresa (and from anyone else who happens to let me bend their ear for a few minutes, including Vicki), I‘m constantly learning and improving. At the ripe old age of 52, I must be the oldest novice client that Ian has ever taken on but age is not a differentiator at Oldencraig; I‘m always made to feel welcome, I get the same 5* treatment as everyone else a‘m pushed as hard as my younger counterparts to realise my goals. The positive atmosphere and the fantastic, well maintained facilities present an environment in‘s a pleasure to ride and compete!!

Danny Berta

I started riding at Oldencraig in 2001. After retiring my 28 year old horse due to a tendon injury, I felt I needed to keep my riding going but did not feel able to take on another younger horse as I am not as supple and co-ordinated as I would like to be these days. I have received a lot of encouragement and help from the Oldencraig instructors, particularly Giles Relf over the last 2 years. It has also been interesting to see the many improvements Ian has made to the centre during the time I have been going there.

Jane Kendall

Dear Ian and all the staff at Oldencraig,

I would just like to say a big thank you for selling my horse Pip. Oldencriag really pulled out all the stops to sell Pip for me and I know that he went to a good home. I would recommend you to anybody who wants to either sell their horse or to send their horse to you for schooling. Many Thanks.

Upon relocating to the UK for work, I wanted to continue riding and training in dressage. Having left my fantastic little horse, my wonderful trainer and my years of built up contacts in Australia, I had to effectively start again in an unfamiliar environment, a very scary thought. I needed to find a new horse along with a new trainer and hopefully the support system that would be able to guide me on the ways of British Dressage. As I am not a professional rider I had no contacts in England so decided to surf the net. I found the Oldencraig web site and thought it looked impressive. I contacted Ian and was invited down to have a look around. I was pleased to find that Oldencraig looked as good, if not better, than the website.

During my visit I discovered that Oldencraig was able to provide all of the things I needed. There were quality horses for sale, fantastic horse accommodation, great arenas, horse transport and grooms all in one package. It also provided access to on site trainers all under the expert guidance of Vicki Thompson. At first I was daunted by Oldencraig as I had come from a very small yard in Australia but I have found that, despite its size, it is a very friendly place. The staff and liveries have made me feel welcome and are happy to explain the differences between Australia and England regarding all things horsey (like what is haylage? and where is the vet? and who is a good farrier? and what is a group 4 rider?).

The best recommendation I can give for Oldencraig and Ian Winfield though is the honesty under which the business is run. When the first horse that I purchased from Ian was not suitable he replaced him, without question and without further financial outlay, just as he said he would during my initial meeting. I am now happily working with my new young horse Oliver and once we become more established really looking forward to training with Vicki and competitions.

Vickie Howarth

Following the loss of my horse in June 2004 after a partnership of 22 years, I couldn‘t decide whether to continue with horses or to find another hobby. To help with the decision, I booked some schoolmaster lessons with Giles at Oldencraig. This really focussed my mind on what I wanted to do and the search for a new equine partner began. Finally, I settled on a four year old Irish Sports Horse called Quinn and he duly moved into my old livery yard which is ten minutes from my home in Kent. I soon realised that this was not the place to be if I wanted to progress with my youngster so I contacted Ian about moving to Oldencraig. After a tour of the facilities I was convinced that Oldencraig is the best place for Q‘s future development and he moved in to his new home in June 2005. It may seem strange kee‘s horse in the next county, but because the yard has such high standards and is run to a routine, I find that it is easier to plan my day than with my previous arrangements. All of the time that I spend at Oldencraig is quality time with my horse and I often refer to this immaculate yard as a ˜haven of tranquillity‘ after a busy day working in London. Q‘s education is progressing nicely. We are having lessons from Vicki and at the beginning of the winter we put Quinn on schooling livery so that he can benefit from some additional professional guidance from Giles and Abby. It is ten years since I last competed in a dressage competition, but with the effort that is being put in‘s training at Oldencraig and the progress that he has made so far, I can hardly wait to start learning the tests again. Watch this space!!

Judy Ayers-Morgan.

Dear Ian and Vicki

I am writing on behalf of the whole B.D.S.C committee to thank you very much for kindly supporting the ball and being Master of Ceremonies. Also, thank you very much for donating the two amazing prizes at Oldencraig for the raffle. We were able to raise over £4000 at the ball through the sale of the tickets, raffle, auction and games this year, which will enable us to continue to support dressage at all levels for the forthcoming year. Many thanks once again for your continuing support.

Cathy Wright - B.D.S.C Ball 21st January 2006

Thank you Oldencraig for providing such a wonderful home for Multi at such short notice and for making us both feel so welcome.

Hazel

My first experience at OEC was on a warm sunny September day. I drove down the drive with two gleaming bay horses in white bandages grazing to the left, while flags flew over the competition arena and the stable complex shone to my right. OEC certainly had the WOW factor from the start!

I had recently transferred from Australia to the UK with my partner‘s work commitments and was initially looking for lessons with some vague idea to eventually purchase a horse. I had turned up to OEC unannounced, as was my intention, to really check out the facilities. Greeted by Jacqui, the receptionist, who always seems to have a ready smile when you walk in the door, I organized lessons on a schoolmaster and didn‘t look back from there.

What impressed me from the start was the general feeling that everyone was interested in helping each other ride in whatever capacity you wanted. Under the watchful eye of Vicki Thompson as principal rider with the senior instructors assisting, everyone appears to help each other.

After a few months of lessons I enquired about purchasing a horse. Not knowing anything about the UK horse industry, I was fairly worried about purchasing the right horse. I was fairly sure in my mind about the qualities I needed to improve my riding and learn from my stay in the UK. Attracted to Ian Winfield‘s guarantee of a replacement horse if behavioral problems occurred, my request was for a quiet, uncomplicated 7 - 8 year old medium level dressage horse, surely a big ask for anyone. Ian, while not promising anything initially, came back the next day with a suitable prospect. With some trepidation with the prospect appearing so soon, I met Urban. This horse was everything I asked for and more, a combination of a willing nature and good paces, I purchased him.

Transition from client having lessons to livery client was seamless. The European style livery setup appears to cater for all types of riders and horse owners. Oldencraig continued to excel with each horse looked after by the same people each day, and they seem to thrive in this environment.

Oldencraig has far exceeded my expectations of a horse establishment. The professional setup combined with a unique sense of family make for a lovely place to enjoy your riding. Oldencraig should certainly be proud of their achievements and I hope to enjoy their surrounds for sometime to come.

Tracy (Urban)

I phoned on the off chance to see if Oldencraig had any horses for sale within my budget. There were 3 which we went to see, they were turned out and shown to us in the highest of standards. As a result we brought a 3 year old Dutch gelding, the after sales service was fantastic so much so we stayed and will be starting our second year at Oldencraig - it is well worth the hours drive to the yard! The progress my horse has shown this last year had been a pleasure to see, I put this down to the expert care and training along with the wonderful facilities. Ian, Vicki and their team are very supportive and very welcoming - Best off chance phone call I ever made.

Sian Walker (with her horse Edgar)

My horse Jerry spent 11 weeks at Oldencraig this year recovering from a tendon injury. Obviously he was assigned to box rest and thereafter the vet instructed walking on concrete (preferably hacking) for increased periods culminating in 90 minutes. Easier said than done! Working in London full time, with dark windy evenings and a handful of a 16hh thoroughbred was not proving an easy job. Hence I called Oldencraig to see if he could move in there.

Ian was very helpful and Jerry moved in two days later (I was lucky) at an agreed time frame. The combination of the facilities (the horse walker, indoor school, safe enclosed environment), the riders (who hacked him out daily for an hour) and the staff (who followed all veterinary instructions and hand walked him) meant that he was rehabilitated in the shortest period of time and with the best results. It was also a huge weight off my mind as without the time I simply could not have done this alone. I am pleased that Jerry is now fit and competing again. Thank you to all at OEC.

Jo Nixon

Dear Vicki

On behalf of the Lusitano Breed Society and the Spanish Assoc. Thank you so much for judging our classes at Windsor. You made such a professional job of it, with so many entries in a small ring, giving everyone a good chance to show their horses. We were all very impressed and not a squeak of complaint from anyone (unheard of!). I do hope we can ask you again. It was a pleasure to meet you.

The Hon Mrs C Wynn, The Lusitano Breed Society of Great Britain

We discussed at our first meeting, Georgie was originally going to stay until the end of March. However, I was keen to leave him for a longer period and the summer was then the obvious time to take him back home. I have been thrilled with the progress he has made since Theresa has been riding him and also learned a lot myself. She is a very good teacher. I am very keen now to see if I am going to be able to cope with Georgie by myself and need to know the answer to this. If it is OK with you I would like to be able to bring him back for a booster later in the year to keep my confidence up.

I know there is a saying from rags to riches but I have invented a new saying ........... from bullet to red ribbons. I was so desperate with my horse Georgie before I was introduced to you. He was dangerous and I hate to admit it, but I knew it would be a matter of time before I ended up in hospital or worse. The last trainer I went to for help suggested a bullet, my friend suggested Oldencraig. Although it was a very long way from home in North Oxfordshire, I was prepared to make the journey. I remember sat in your kitchen crying and the words you said to me that I remember most are ‘there is no such a thing as a bad horse, it is one or more of three regimes: poor feeding programme, lack of work or lack of discipline. I quickly realized that the latter two of the three were my problem.

Oldencraig is the most amazing place. It is immaculately clean, the routine is rigid and the whole team is knowledgeable and friendly and the entire feel of the place is of immense quality.

Georgie settled into work very quickly and enjoyed every minute. The first competition (his first ever) he received a red ribbon. His second two competitions ... he received two red ribbons with scores in the 70‘s. I was told by previous trainers that I would never get this horse anywhere near a competition arena. It is not the winning that is important here, it is the fact that I have a sane horse after all. I have ridden him on the busy road outside Oldencraig and I came back with a big smile on my face. I never thought I would ever be doing that!

I would like to thank you personally for the time you have spent chatting with me about Georgie‘s progress and future. You have an excellent way of saying the right thing and I always come away feeling great. You have made me feel very welcome and part of the ‘family’ and I have enjoyed every minute of the time I have spent at Oldencraig. I am eternally grateful to you and your amazing team for my wonderful new horse. I think every horse owner should taste the Oldencraig experience. I feel honoured to have been part of it.
PS I‘ll be back ...!!!!!!

Karen McArthur

Thank you very much for your help with my saddle - I now have a new horse!

Jacqui

Just a quick note to thank you so much for a lovely lunch at the championship show. It was very kind of you and superb. Sorry I cannot make it to the tack shop launch. Very sorry that Suzanne is not there on a Saturday, she is absolutely lovely but great news Jane will be there a she is great fun.

Sue Gallagher

I am just writing to let you know the show you very kindly helped sponsor raised £5,100 for our funds. Once again the show was a great success with plenty of entries and spectators for each class. The weather was fine, not too hot, and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. The money will be used to help as many disabled children to ride as possible.

May I say on behalf of everyone at Burstow Park a very big thank you for your generosity without which we would be unable to continue. Thank you once again.

Eileen McLaren, Burstow Park RDA Horse Show, 25th June 2006

Thank you very much to all the staff for helping me with my work at Oldencraig. I have learned a lot from the 2 weeks I spent with you. I enjoyed working with the horses and doing all the different things. All the staff were lovely and I will definitely miss a few of them. Thank you very much!

Katherine (Imberhorne School)

Ian, Thank you for taking care of War Child‘s operation!

Karen

Just to let you know I had a great time at the OEC and learnt a lot. It‘s just all a question of whether I can apply it when there is no one telling me. Everyone was great and really friendly and will most definitely come again if I can take time off work again.

Sue

Just a note to thank you very much for allowing us to have a stall and run a raffle at the Regional Finals over the weekend. We raised £245.00 for our funds which was great. We really do appreciate how supportive you are to our group.

Eileen McLaren - Burstow Park Riding for the Disabled

We attended your championship show on Saturday and I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who organised the show. We qualified under a wild card entry and had a really lovely day at your fantastic facilities! Thank you for a great event and we look forward to returning in a couple of weeks!

Julie Thompson competing with Chukkaroo

Just a note to say ‘thank you’ for a very enjoyable day at the unaffiliated Summer Dressage Championships on 7th October. Despite my horse obviously feeling very under the weather (we have since found out that he has a virus) and performing an absolutely awful test, it was a lovely day and the event was run beautifully. It encouraged me to see a lovely native pony doing so well in so many classes, and also please pass on my thanks to the judges in the elementary class, Jane Lavington and Jane Stevens, who marked my test very kindly and were spot on when they said my horse was lacking energy and enthusiasm (which was a very tactful way to put it!). Thank you for a wonderful day, hope to see you all again soon.

Jennifer Baxall-Martin

Thank you so much for the use of your wonderful facilities on 9th October for the BHS E&T Training Day. Your centre is one of the best I have seen for a long time. The horses you provided for our use were superb and your staff professional, friendly and welcoming. In short, Oldencraig is a great credit to you and the BHS approval system.

Patrick Print FBHS - Chairman British Horse Society

On behalf of the Burstow Park RDA Committee I would like to thank you for sponsoring one of the races at our Race Night last Saturday. We raised £776.00 for our funds, which was great, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. As always many thanks once again for supporting us.

Eileen McLaren Burstow Park Riding for the Disabled Association

Thank you both so much for my lovely birthday clothes. A girl can never have enough riding clothes! Thank you both also for your continued help and support. I am finding everything very difficult but your help makes it a whole lot easier!

Emma Alshaw

I wanted to write you a quick note to let you know how grateful I am for all the help and understanding you gave me when trying to find a horse. You really couldn‘t have been more tolerant and accommodating and I do appreciate that very much. Maybe I was too hasty with Flash, but I am sure you understand my reservations with everything I have gone through. I gather you have found him a new home which is wonderful news as he is a lovely horse and deserves someone to have fun with. I also hope that means that you have not lost out too much with the situation. Once again thank you very much and rest assured that I will try to return the favour by putting business your way.

Alison (Priors Farm Vet Surgery)

Where do I start?? I am writing on behalf of the whole B.D.S.C. committee to thank you very much for your continuing support of our Ball, without the generosity of businesses like yours we could not hope to raise the sums of money that we do. The 5-days training and the £500 Tack Shop voucher so generously donated by you for the raffle were among the star prizes of the evening and generated a lot of interest and comment. Plus with your enormous generosity in the auction, and bringing so many guests, you have contributed a huge amount to the sums we have been able to raise.

We were able to raise over £7,000 at the Ball through the sale of the tickets, raffle, auction and games this year, which is one of the highest amounts we have achieved and so will enable us to continue to support dressage at ail levels for the forthcoming year, through the Talent Spotting scheme, Judges Convention etc.

Many thanks once again for your continuing support and we look forward to seeing you again very soon.

Cathy Wright - BDSC

I would like to thank you and all your staff for all your hard work in producing and training Flag. A special thank you to Alice for her riding and to Vicki Thompson for her professional expertise.

Lucie Clarke

My daughter Aimee has still not come down to earth after winning the Most Improved Horse and Rider Combination at OEC on Saturday 9th June 2007. She says it‘s the best prize ever and can‘t wait to meet Harry Dabbs and Vicky Thompson.

When I think about every night during the winter when we would arrive at the yard in the dark after school, we would be the only ones in the small floodlit school working away and then be responsible for locking up the yard when we left, it now seems so worthwhile.

We would like to thank you once again.

Irene King

I am writing to thank you very much for all the prizes that I received for winning the most improved horse and rider combination throughout the winter series. Harry Dabbs has been very helpful and his service was excellent. He visited us within a week to measure Royal Rackeen and myself. Our Pony Club, The Crawley & Horsham South branch have been very interested in the fairy tale and have presented it on their website. They have also decided that when we get some photos with the saddle they will feature it in the West Sussex Gazette. Once again thank you and I hope this is just a stepping stone to greater things in the future.

Aimee King and Royal Rackeen

Thank you so much for my fantastic presents. Ian you did me proud, I am still speechless over the lovely jacket and horse statue - such a surprise. What can I say after all these years, thank you does not seem enough. I have enjoyed my time with you more than I ever thought possible. Wiggy moves into retirement looking exceptionally well, thanks to the care he‘s received at OEC. I am looking forward to the future and will watch your progress with great interest - you deserve every possible success.

Kate & Wiggy

I am writing to thank you on behalf of St Peter‘s school in East Grinstead for providing us with an Equestrian Goodie Bag including a £10 voucher to spend at Oldencraig Tack Shop. We used it as a prize in our Grad Draw drawn at out Funday on the 7th July 07.

As you can imagine the prize was extremely popular. With your help the Funday was a tremendous success raising £4200 for our major project, which is for the re-development of the front of our school. This project has several aims:

  • to create additional space for teaching and general school use
  • to repair, renew and improve the appearance of the front of the school
  • to improve the environment and effective use of space in the offices and other areas of the front of the school
  • to further improve security at the school
As you can imagine this is a costly endeavor and the Friends are working very hard to raise the several thousand pounds that we need. Your help is very much appreciated to make out fund-raising a success.

Samantha O‘Neill - Secretary, Friends of St Peters

The children of St Peter‘s school would like to say a big thank you for donating in our funday. The Equestrian bag of goodies was used for the raffle. The amount of money that we raised was a grand total of £4200 and all of us enjoyed it very much. It was a great success. Thank you once again.

The Children of St Peter‘s

I felt the need to contact you guys after seeing an article in the ‘horse’ magazine, I worked and trained at Oldencraig around 10 years ago when Anne and her husband ran it, I have to say the facilities you have now are just as I imagined they should be, the potential was always there for it to be the center that you now have. I now work as a freelance swimming instructor but do have a fabulous veteran mare (25yrs Irish Draught x Appaloosa) who I have lots of fun with in ridden showing classes and hopefully soon will be taking my first tentative steps into dressage after eight years of knowing each other! I learnt a great deal in my time at Oldencraig about ridding with the European seat and working in harmony with my horse. I always feel that despite having been around horsed since the age of five and in my younger years worked in some fabulous yards I rate my time at Oldencraig as he place that changed my riding for the best and I still ride with the knowledge I gained. So I wish you all continued success in your future ventures and may even book myself for an instructional riding break, and should you ever need the services of a swimming instructor do give me a shout ......

Nicki Leonie

I just thought I‘d write and thank you for the pair of tickets I won through Local Rider for Leslie Law‘s demo at Oldencraig last night. We really enjoyed the evening and learned a lot from the advice and experiences he was talking about. It was amazing to see Shear H2O and Shear L‘eau as well as Sam Jennings with her lovely horses. Oldencraig was wonderful (as ever) and we were so impressed with their new arena and facilities. My friend and I both agreed that it was one of the best evenings of this type we‘d been to.

Barbara Green

Just a note to thank you for supporting our Race Night on Saturday. The night was very successful and everyone seamed to enjoy themselves. We raised nearly £800 for our funds which was great.

Eileen McLaren - Burstow Park Riding For The Disabled Association

We have just got home from supporting our daughter, Joanne Cooper in the Unaffiliated Summer Dressage Series Championship where she happily came seventh in the Prelim 16. Jo has now competed at your center on three occasions and has been so grateful for the friendship and support that all of your staff have provided. While this was our first visit as parents we could immediately see what she meant. Supporting your daughters riding is not always the most relaxing ways spending the weekend but the day we spent at OEC was well organized and very enjoyable. Keep up the great work and please pass our thanks to all of your excellent team and we hope to be seeing you much more in the future.

Steve and Pat Cooper (on behalf of Jo and Melita)

There is not words enough to express my thanks to Ian and Vicki and all the team at OEC. I have trained with Vicki for many years and first met Ian some time ago when he first brought OEC. All I can say is wow at the transformation at OEC. OEC is always clean and immaculate and the facilities are second to none. I am sure you would be hard pushed to find an equal yard in Europe never mind the country. My horses are down for winter due to my ill health and I must say they want for nothing. My fears were immediately eradicated from day one. My horses are usually based at home with me so I was a little nervous of them going into a big yard but at OEC they are very happy and look well. They have plenty of one to one care, probably more that I have time to give them at home. One of my horses I brought from OEC earlier in the year, a 4 year old and she is going to exceed all my expectations. My other horse is by Vicki‘s old ride Jazz Dancer and he is turning out to be something special and will be with the help and training from Vicki. The only problem I have is that the tack shop has such fantastic stuff I end up spending too much in there!! ha ha. I just wish OEC was closer, the five hour journey down every month I normally make for my training is well worth it. Whenever I arrive at OEC I have a warm friendly greeting from all. I just wished I could pick up OEC and move it to Lincolnshire. Thanks to everyone.

Jayne Lancashire

Thank you so much for your kindness in letting me bring my mare for a practice on a show day. It is much appreciated and hopefully will help in my future competition attempts.

Margaret Drewe - Judge

Just a note to thank your very much for your invitation. I had not heard him before so found it most interesting. I thank you for the opportunity. All good wishes with the horses.

Helen Webber

Just a brief note to thank you both for the wonderful opportunity of seeing Jo Hinneman at OEC on Saturday evening. It was a real privilege to see him work with Vicki and the OEC horses and riders, and indeed to see him ride. He clearly loved the OEC horses! Thanks so much.

Fiona Carlin - Judge

Thank you both for making the last 3 years at OEC so enjoyable. I can‘t quite believe I came with a horse that was OK at Medium and now have one ready to try at Inter I !!! You run a wonderful yard and I am grateful to have been part of it for the last few years. I will miss everyone but will be back for the Sunday clinics.

Louise, Andy and Baloo

A quick note to thank you so much for all the tickets you so generously supplied to see Jo Hinneman on Saturday evening. It was great to see Oldencraig at night - it really is a fantastic venue and all the investment you have made in the center over the years has made it into a stunning facility. Jo was fascinating to listen to and I came away with new ideas to try at home (within reason of course, I‘ll have to leave the canter pirouettes - for this week at least) I really loved watching Vicki ride and also Aaron - I know I‘m not a trainer or judge but my goodness he can really ride and no doubt he will definitely be one to watch in the future. The horses were fabulous, you certainly have a lot of horse power there. It was a real treat to see Papillion and I shall follow his career with Vicki with much interest they looked a great partnership.

I could barely keep my eyes open for the drive home so we needed to get away when we did, although many thanks for the invitation to have a drink or too - it was probably about 3 hours past my usual bedtime when we got home - I know, a real wild child !!

Thanks so much again Ian and do please pass on my thanks to Jo, Vicki and the rest of your team there, it was a really great evening and much enjoyed by us all.

Claire - British Dressage

This note is just to say ˜Thank you‘ to you and all your staff for the fantastic care that has given to my horse ˜Beethoven‘ over the last 3 months. Jag and his team have been amazing, Beethoven looks like a different horse now and everyone has been so supportive and encouraging to me too. Michelle and Aaron have worked so incredibly hard as well. Beethoven is such a contented easy going horse and they have been so sympathetic with him, giving him all the time he needed and prodding me in the right direction to give me the confidence too. He seems so happy at Oldencraig I almost feel bad to take him back home! But thanks to such kind and consistent training and handling I ‘m so excited about the prospect of being able to have some fun with him now. Thank you for offering us such a wonderful opportunity.

I originally began competing at Oldencraig on a regular basis some years ago, due to the great variety of classes and competitions as well as the friendly and helpful staff and great infrastructure of facilities. After a year of struggling to find a reputable, professional livery yard I decided to look Oldencraig up, on the off chance they may have some spaces. Having two horses can sometimes make it hard to find accommodation for the pair, but Oldencraig were very accommodating. After being very pleasantly surprised by the facilities on offer at a competitive price, my search end there and then on looking around. Having looked after my horses myself for some time, I had very high standards which I had struggled to match at other livery yards. Oldencraig not only matched my standards but consistently surpassed them. Ian, Vicky and their staff made me and my horses feel welcome whether we are dressage superstars or happy hackers, and for this especially, it makes it hard to leave. Having been offered a place at the University of Bristol, it was an opportunity I couldn‘t turn down and not bearing to part with my horses, they are going with me; otherwise I would have no reason to leave. I will miss Oldencraig greatly, from the fantastic facilities, and the willing to help staff, but mostly I will miss the people with whom I hope I have made great friends. When I return to the area, Oldencraig will obviously be my first point of call.

I am an amateur rider who owns two young stallions normally kept at home. I realise breeding stallions need professional riding/training to gain credibility as competition horses.I placed First Way at OEC with Vicki and Ian for Aaron Guy to train and compete for many reasons, their riders receive top level ongoing training which is reflected in the success they have at all levels with horses in their care. I wished to be involved in the training and riding which was welcomed, plus I can obtain help and advice when needed. First Way spends most of his time at OEC at present and comes home for "R and R" plus stud duties on a regular basis which has worked out well, he is fed exactly what he gets at home so there are no difficulties. I am able to use all the fascilities at OEC, ie. washdown areas, solarium, lunging arenas, horse walker plus any of the arenas including the indoor with mirrors, a definate bonus! In the short time First Way has been a resident he has been competed twice, on his 2nd outing he and Aaron won the class with 73.45%. Showmeister the other stallion is ridden by my daughter Kirstie, they are currently training with Aaron, Showmeister has 120 Bd points, the pair will be making their debut at Elementary level very soon having competed at novice at H.C. just to find their feet together.

Ian‘s Yard Manager Jag can be relied upon to help with queries, he is always willing to "go the extra mile" for clients which is greatly appreciated. Vicki and Ian‘s staff are hard working, friendly and professional and maintain the whole complex to a very high standard. I would recommend OEC without hesitation to an owner who wishes to be listened to.

Dear Vicki,

Just a quick note to thank you for the lessons you have given me over the last few months. I know that I don‘t match or even come close to some of the fabulous riders that you teach so I thank you for your time and consideration. I have had a good eventing season with a few decent wins achieved predominantly through good dressage scores and I am sure that this is down to your help and direction. I really did appreciate the 6 lessons that I had with you as a result of winning the championships last year. My best wishes and thanks.

Dear Ian,

Just a note to say thank you very much for sponsoring a race at our race night last Saturday. We had a very successful evening with plenty of people supporting us and we managed to raise £1150 for our funds. Many thanks for all the support that you give us.

Just thought that I would let you know how Ziggy is doing. He has settled in well and goes out in the field all day with another 4 year old and they both follow each other around the field! We now have regular lessons and he is improving greatly, the proof of this is that we won the Romeo Walk & Trot Championship with 68.9%, which is held at Great Bookham Equestrian Centre. I will send you a photo of him winning once they are published. Next Sunday will be taking part in the Sunshine Tour Championship again in the walk and trot sections so fingers crossed that we can perform like today! I would like to say a big thank you for selling such a wonderful little horse. He is a superstar!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your staff for making Lily‘s stay so enjoyable (for her and for us). John and I have been astonished and delighted at how far her education has come and we cannot offer enough praise to Janice, whose expertise and patience has made so much difference. I have been taking fortnightly lessons on Lily and I can feel the improvement in her every time I ride. That she managed to take a creditable 7th place in her first dressage outing is the obvious measure of Ja‘s schooling skills but more impressive‘s faultless behaviour throughout the whole event which can only be put down to consistent and correct training. It was a pleasure to watch and made us very proud owners.

Your staff are absolutely wonderful too, from the hard working grooms and maintenance staff through to the riders and the instructors, the shop staff and of course the brilliant Jag who irons out any wrinkles and makes running such a huge yard look effortless when it obviously isn‘t. They are all very friendly and professional and we look forward to our weekly visits; although we do make the effort ourselves, please thank everyone on our behalf for making us so welcome. Your yard and staff are truly a credit to you and we would not hesitate to recommend you in the highest possible terms to anyone looking for livery or schooling. We only wish that you were closer to home so that we could make‘s stay a permanent one.

I would like to extend my thanks and compliments to all the staff at Oldencraig, in particular Ian, Jag, Joe, Tracey and Janice for making the purchase of my new horse, Ruiz Senor a delightful experience. After 28 years of riding and owning horses and the recent retirement of my current veteran horse, I decided to treat myself to an Andalusian. I tried a number of Andalusians for sale both privately and at horse dealers prior to my visit to Oldencraig to see a 5 year old chestnut andalusian for sale privately via Ian Winfield, owner of Oldencraig.

As soon as I saw this andalusian I knew he was in a different league to the others I had tried. He was in excellent condition, very happy and settled with the characteristics the breed is famous for. He had been sympathetically trained during his months at Oldencraig and allowed to develop slowly which resulted in a wonderful young horse with an exceptionally willing attitude to his work.

Throughout the buying process Oldencraig were truly superb and extremely helpful. I even decided to keep my new horse there on schooling livery for a couple of months whilst we got acquainted. I had some lessons with his trainer which really helped me to understand how to get the best from him and made bringing him home and settling him in much easier. The liveries and staff were really friendly and the facilities superb. I would have no hesitation in recommending Oldencraig to my friends for lessons, training or purchasing/selling horses and would definitely buy from Oldencraig again, in fact, I don‘t think I‘d look anywhere else! Thanks again.
